Wouldn't be a bad name for a bar.

Found this little gent crossing the street outside my house and I took him in for a photo shoot. They make great pets, but this guy wanted the free life, so I let him be. I do love chameleons, though.

Wow. How cool!

Is that some sort of solar panel on top of that tiki?

I've always wanted pet cameleon.

It is indeed a solar panel! It's a small solar powered lamp. A pet chameleon is really great to have, and I'd love to have one again, but these guys were born in the wild, and I'd never take that away from them. The little guys you can get at stores make amazing pets!

Oh nice! I've actually thought about doing something similar with a tiki torch. that'd be much more exciting than those boring garden lights.

Oh yeah. I'm currently getting a masters in wildlife management. So I understand that going out and collecting them from the wild is NOT cool.

Well, folks do collect them here in Hawaii because they're not native, and some folks do it because they might not be entirely safe, but honestly, I think most people who do it are just people with no jobs who turn around and sell them, and while I thought about buying on for a long time, the look on that little guy's face when I put him in a terrarium just temporarily for the photos -- that look told me he was used to having a lot of space, and he wanted it that way.

Master's in wildlife management sounds like a fantastic way to go!

Interesting. I didn't know that there were invasive chameleons. Now you've got the wildlife management gears turning. Now I'm going to have to look that up.

I think folks brought them to the island for some reason, possibly food -- as that's really the only way anything gets on the island -- and they just stuck around. If you're passionate about that sort of thing, Hawaii is a hilarious study of wildlife management gone terribly wrong. From our missing-toed pigeons to our wonky-tailed cats, there's evidence all around of what happens when you introduce an outside species to an island: Darwin goes out the window and shit gets fucked up.

They were probably brought as pets. That's what happened with Lion Fish in the Caribbean.

Yeah, we had a professor that came by and talked about bird conservation on Hawai'i. It was really depressing. Sounds like it is hard to get any conservation work done there.

On an island full of rich and fertile volcanic soil whose biggest export is trash? Yeah, you could say it's hard to get a lot of things done. There's a lot of good about Hawaii, but sadly, tourism is the big moneymaker, and folks aren't motivated to spend time on a lot else.
